Movies: Powder (1995)

"Powder: Inside most people there's a feeling of being separate, separated from everything.
Linsey: And?
Powder: And they're not. They're part of absolutely everyone, and everything."

The movie is about Jeremy Reed or Powder, an albino electromagnetic genius teenager (you'd think the color was painted on with cheap paint) with no-ordinary powers of telekinesis, empath, telepathy and the ability to absorb raw energy and channel it. He's not like other people. Literally.
Story begins when his mother is struck by lightning before Jeremy's birth and being rushed to the hospital but she dies in premature childbirth. It turns out the baby has albinism. His redneck father runs away and He ends up in his grandparent's basement until sheriff has found Jeremy living there alone. Then sheriff takes him to live in a foster home and sends him to public school. Everyone hates him so much. The superpowers and hatred go on for about two hours before Jeremy tries to run away because he almost kills a guy. And so on and so on.

The most awkward moments is when Jeff Goldblum (Jeremy's teacher and the only person that's nice to him) discovers that Jeremy's parents never touched him because they were scared of his powers, at which point he reaches out his hand and begins to caress Jeremy's head in an empty cafetaria. AWKWARD!

The movie isn't bad, but it isn't great either. A lil' bit Hallmark-ish i think. Like an example of what to do right in living one's life, playing out the cockeyed theory that Jeremy is just too beautiful for this world, etc etc. This probably isn't a movie for everybody. On its own terms, it is nearly unwatchable because it is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned): It includes a glimpse of bare buttocks when the bullies tear off Powder's clothes and push him in a mud puddle :p
